Neal Bascomb (me) is a national award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of a number of books, all non-fiction narratives, all focused on inspiring stories of adventure or achievement. I’ve made a career writing stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. My work has been translated into over 15 languages, featured in several documentaries, and optioned for major film and television projects.
I am also the creator of Work/Craft/Life, a newsletter about the illuminating stories of our lives told through our work/craft. Like most of us, I have been shaped by the jobs I’ve done, with all their attending triumphs and heartbreaks. At age nine, I started my adventure as a lollipop salesman. Since then, I’ve worked a range of jobs, including forklift operator, babysitter, dog walker, bookstore clerk, TJ Maxx cashier, purveyor of knives, financial analyst, pool cleaner, legal intern, hockey referee, international journalist, book editor, literary agent and publisher. Born in Colorado and raised in St. Louis, I am also the product of public school and lots of time playing hockey.
An avid hiker, skier, and coffee drinker, I am happily settled in Philadelphia with my family. If you’re interested in how I research and write my books, here’s an essay that provides a window into the madness at Work/Craft/Life.
